Wisconsin State Journal

Wisconsin will receive $810 million in federal stimulus money to establish high-speed passenger rail from Milwaukee to Madison and to study the possibility of extending it to the Twin Cities, President Barack Obama’s administration will announce Thursday.

That would eventually bring 110 mph passenger rail service from Chicago to Madison after years of fruitless attempts to jump-start the project and give Madison its first passenger rail service since 1971.

Report Finds Stimulus Funding Decisions Missed Opportunity to Make Progress on Transportation

Wisconsin Ranks in Bottom Third

wispirgMadison,WI -A new report released today by Smart Growth America, WISPIRG and UEDA based on official data of the states’ American Reinvestment and Recovery Act transportation funding decisions thus far, found Wisconsin in the bottom third of the state ranking for allocations that spur long‐term growth and capitalize on an opportunity to invest in a 21st century transportation system. The report shows that some states are moving aggressively to make badly needed repairs and prepare for a 21st century transportation system. Others are letting their roads and public transportation deteriorate, adding new capacity while they cannot take care of what they have.

Toward quieter trains

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Editorial
June 23, 2009

High-speed rail could be an effective economic development tool and, as it turns out, provide residents who live near tracks with some peace and quiet.

A high-speed rail route linking Milwaukee and Madison holds high promise for improved transportation and economic development in Wisconsin. And now it turns out it may bring an added plus for folks in communities such as Hartland, Oconomowoc and Brookfield: more peace and quiet.

According to an article by the Journal Sentinel’s Scott Williams, state officials are telling community leaders that if the state gets $519 million in federal economic stimulus funds for the project, they will try to upgrade safety measures at each affected railroad crossing so that all trains can pass through silently.

Midwest, California front-runners for $8B in high-speed rail funds

Michael Tarm
Associated Press

6/18/2009

CHICAGO — High-speed rail plans in California and the Midwest appear to be front runners in the race for $8 billion in stimulus cash based on federal criteria released Wednesday that favor projects with established revenue sources and multistate cooperation.

California voters last November approved nearly $10 billion in state bonds that could be combined with federal money to build 800 miles of high-speed track. Eight Midwest states have cooperated closely to promote a network, with Chicago as its hub, that would join 12 metropolitan areas within 400 miles.

Karen Rae, deputy administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration, stopped short of naming favorites during an interview with The Associated Press in Chicago, but she praised Midwestern states for their cooperation and pointed to California’s bond issue.
